Amidst the rapidly increasing incidents across Europe involving Islamic migrants, including stabbings, car rammings, assassinations of critics of Islam, rape, grooming gangs, and the list goes on, there is a major topic under discussion nowadays: Islam, and whether it should be reformed and understood in its so-called true context, or whether it should be viewed as an existential threat to Europe and the West as a whole. Unfortunately, most analyses and discussions available are based on a very weak understanding of Islam, the mindset of the Islamic environment, and the general way Muslims think.
Douglas Murray in his book “The Strange Death of Europe” presented a critical analysis of Islam, immigration, multiculturalism, and the transformation of European identity. A key theme in the book is the challenge of integrating Islam into European societies where Murray claimed that Western nations “refuse to debate the challenges posed by Islam” out of fear of being labelled as racist or Islamophobic. Although, his book made a lot of noise, unfortunately, still some people, especially liberals, preserved it as a typical Western complaining about brown people coming to his country.
Perhaps, as an Ex-Muslim who escaped the clutches and fangs of this religion, which I confidently classify as a fascist ideology, I can offer you a deeper perspective that explains these symptoms seen in the West, symptoms that seem to emerge daily, particularly in European countries with a large Muslim population.
I was born in Syria as a Muslim, like any other child who drinks Islamic religion with his mother’s milk and is brainwashed in every corner, at home, in the mosque, and at school. In my childhood, I was among the top students in religious studies and the Quran, memorizing more than 80 pages by heart, as Quran memorizers were highly respected and honored within the family and Islamic circles. I vividly remember being in elementary school when the September 11 attacks happened. The overwhelming joy that filled the streets was unforgettable. When I went for a haircut at that time, the barbershop was filled with people mocking America and praising Osama bin Laden for his cunning and ability to strike the American people, chanting: “This is what you deserve, you infidels! He has taught you a lesson you will never forget.”
Despite my young age, my simple mind was afraid rather than happy, knowing that attacking the most powerful country in the world with such brutality and terrorism, killing more than 3,000 innocent people in one day, would have dire consequences. During my teenage years, I was filled with hatred and resentment towards the West and the Jews. We were brainwashed twice—once by religion and once by the Assad dictatorship, which was deeply hostile to Israel and the West. It was inevitable that I would fall into this trap, which had been dug and prepared for me even before I was born. At the age of 17, doubts began to creep into my mind, but I ignored them. When I started befriending some Christian people, I noticed that they were kind, moral, and very friendly. Yet what I always heard from Imams kept ringing in my ears: “These people are infidels. They will burn forever in the worst possible ways. Stay away from them.” One day after Friday prayers, I went to the mosque’s imam, the same one who had taught me the Quran when I was younger. I asked him about the fate of Christians and whether it was wrong to befriend them, as I had never seen any harm from them. He answered angrily: “I did not raise you like this, my son! What has happened to you as you’ve grown up? They are infidels who deny Allah and should not be befriended or associated with.” I challenged him, saying, “No, Sheikh, Islam is a religion of mercy, and Islam acknowledges Christians. We have no problem with them.” He asked me bluntly: “Do they believe that Jesus, the son of Mary, is a messenger or the son of God?” I answered, “Of course they believe he is the son of God.” With cold confidence, he replied, “This is outright blasphemy. They will burn in hell forever.”
I left the mosque angrily, believing that this imam was extreme in his views and did not represent true Islam. Instead of receiving religion from the mouths of imams and scholars, I began to delve into Islam independently, especially since our family had a vast collection of religious books and was closely connected to well-known religious figures across the Arab world. At that time, I was convinced that I would reform Islam and adhere to its true teachings. After all, this hate couldn’t come from the real religion of Allah. In the end, wasn’t the Prophet Mohammad a wonderful, loving, and tolerant role model? Oh, how naive I was back then.
It wasn’t long before I received striking news that shook my very core. I could hardly believe what I was hearing, my older brother, with whom I rarely engaged in intellectual or religious discussions, confessed to my mother that he was doubting the very foundations of Islam and had negative thoughts about the religion! My brother?! who was a hundred times more religiously committed than I was, praying five times a day constantly! How could this be true? When we discussed the matter, I shared my doubts and objections to certain religious texts, and he, in turn, shared his own doubts and criticisms. To our astonishment, we had both been sitting side by side for months, hiding the same thoughts, too afraid to reveal them to each other, even though we shared the same doubts! We calmed down slightly after the initial shock and made a pact: we would search for the truth, no matter what it was, and we would share all our discoveries and thoughts with each other.
Fortunately, at that time, we finally had internet access at home—something that came late to Syria due to the regime’s fear of citizens using it against them. It took only a few weeks of research, investigation, and critical reading on the internet for us to realize that we had been sold the biggest lie in history—that everything we had believed in and followed was nothing but a grand deception! Our subconscious minds fought against this realization so fiercely that we fell into a deep state of depression for some time. On one hand, it was clear that this religion was full of violence, hatred, and scientific and logical contradictions. But on the other hand, could it really be that my brother and I, somehow, had discovered the truth, while millions of Muslims around us are wrong? Had we developed delusions of grandeur? Had we inherited some kind of narcissism from our father? This can’t be true he was a lawyer and simply had an unshakable confidence in himself that can’t be interrupted this way. From that pivotal moment of transformation, everything became history.
If we fast-forward several years, due to the Syrian civil war and the personal death threats we faced at the hands of an Al-Qaeda member at that time, we began to dream of living in a country where Islam did not exist, a place where you could say what you wanted, breathe freely, and live without fear. But it was nothing more than a dream at that time. We would open the world map jokingly and debate which country I would teleport to using a portal, inspired by our love for video games and American fantasy movies at the time. Sometimes I would say, “Of course, America! We speak fluent English, unlike our peers.” Other times, we considered Britain, saying, “They have an amazing English accent that makes you feel smarter just by speaking it.” Finally, my brother said, “Do you know what? Germany is the best option.” I replied, “Are you joking? I wouldn’t learn German even if you paid me!” He countered, “We can study there for free, and their universities are highly advanced. I want to build a prosperous future.”
Given all of this, you can imagine the disappointment and fear that overwhelm me every day as I witness Islam spreading in the very country I once dreamed of as a safe haven from destruction, backwardness, and religious extremism. At times, I feel a deep sense of hopelessness, watching the West crumble and bow before Islam. Other times, I feel an urgent need to speak out, to warn before the West suffers the same fate as Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and many other Arab countries, places that fell to Islamic rule more than 1400 years ago and underwent an irreversible demographic shift, becoming distorted entities with erased memories, suffering from intellectual decay. Memories of freedom, Christianity, Judaism, civilizations, and ancient languages were replaced by the laws of the Arabian Peninsula. Nations violated intellectually over centuries until they developed Stockholm Syndrome, defending those who destroyed them, enslaved their women, and desecrated their dignity.
The real question that must be answered honestly is:
Can Islam be reformed?
Can all Muslims truly integrate into society?
The unfortunate answer is: No. I do not believe there is even a glimmer of hope. Of course, there are wonderful Muslims everywhere. I have friends and relatives who completely disregard their religion’s teachings and integrate wonderfully into Western society. But what percentage do they represent? Are they the majority or the minority? No one dares to ask these difficult questions today. Instead, we see two extreme reactions. Some call for the mass deportation of all Muslims, a collective punishment that could bring Europe back to the darkest chapters of far-right fascism. While others, particularly the Western extreme left, defend Islam more fiercely than Muslims themselves, as if they were born in Mecca and educated at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. If you truly believe that Islam will naturally reform over time, just as Christianity did in Europe, then you are delusional.
Islam has an automatic defence mechanism against any changes that may occur to it. After all, Muslims fear the distortion of Islam, just as they believe Judaism and Christianity were distorted. Mohammad and his followers, throughout history, worked tirelessly to protect Islam from any modification. They understood that any change would weaken their state, alter their expansionist jihadist policies, and open the door for those dissatisfied with wars, killings, and dominance, or for those who had interests in making the religion more peaceful and tolerant.
One of Islam’s defensive mechanisms is the ruling on killing apostates, which has no disagreement among all major Islamic sects. For example, the hadith states: “Prophet said, whoever changes his religion, kill him” (Al-Bukhari). This hadith is an explicit text stating that whoever apostatizes from Islam must be killed. In another hadith, this Islamic ruling is further confirmed: “The Prophet said, the blood of a Muslim who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah is not permissible to be shed except in one of three cases: a married man who commits adultery, a life for a life, and one who abandons his religion and separates from the community” (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)
In this hadith, the Prophet made it clear that killing a Muslim is only permissible in three cases, including “one who abandons his religion and separates from the community,” meaning an apostate who leaves Islam. Another clear proof is this hadith: “A man who had apostatized from Islam was brought to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he called him to Islam, but he refused, so he killed him” (Al-Bukhari). This hadith is a practical application by the Prophet of the ruling on executing apostates. If you criticize the Quran or claim that it is not valid for all times and places in a desperate attempt to reform Islam, this automatically makes you a clear and explicit disbeliever under Islamic law. This means you believe that Allah is incapable of foresight, that he could not predict the future, and that he lied when He said in the Quran: {And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the all Hearing and all Knowing}
(Al-An`am: 115). He also stated: {There is no change in the words of Allah} (Yunus: 64). It was further emphasized that the Quran is protected and untouchable: {Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian} (Al-Hijr: 9).
Not only has execution been used as a defensive mechanism against criticism or reform of Islam, but also through prophecies warning that a time will come when the religion will be altered or manipulated. This has made all Muslims highly alert and suspicious of any attempts at reform. Anyone who tries to renew Islam will be categorized under this foretold group, reinforcing the certainty among Muslims that such a person is a deceiver with malicious intentions. An example of this is the following hadith: “Mohammad said, after me, there will be leaders who will not follow my guidance, nor will they follow my Sunnah. There will arise among them men whose hearts are the hearts of devils in the bodies of humans” (Sahih Muslim). This hadith refers to corrupt rulers who will change the religion and deviate from the Prophet’s teachings. Another example of these predictions is the following hadith: “The Prophet said, there will be people in my nation who will consider fornication, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments permissible” (Al-Bukhari). This hadith indicates that a time will come when some people will distort the religion and make forbidden things permissible, either through corrupt interpretations or by denying established Islamic rulings. In another hadith, the danger of Islamic reform is explicitly emphasized: “The Prophet said, whoever among you lives after me will see much difference, so adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, cling to it firmly, and beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance” (Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, & Al-Albani). This hadith is very clear in warning that the religion will be altered and innovations will emerge, affirming that salvation lies in strictly adhering to the Sunnah of the Prophet and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs.
Some may argue, “Look at those advocating for moderate Islam; they don’t follow the Hadith or Seerah at all and adhere only to the Quran!” This argument is one of the most absurd and naive claims, demonstrating a fundamental ignorance of Islam. For example, Prayer (Salat), which is the core pillar and foundation of Islam, is not detailed in the Quran at all. Without Hadith, you wouldn’t even know how many prayers there are, how many rak’ahs (units) to perform, or how to pray at all. Without Hadith, you wouldn’t know how to perform Zakat, another pillar of Islam. The Quran mentions Zakat but does not specify the required amount or distribution, these details were clarified through the Sunnah. Additionally, there are no Quranic verses that discuss The Prophet’s birth year, upbringing, childhood, his father’s death before his birth, his care under his mother Amina, his grandfather Abdul Muttalib, and then his uncle Abu Talib. Without the Hadith and Seerah, you would not know who the Prophet’s wives were, the battles he fought, his enemies, or even who the Prophet of Islam actually was in the first place! The Quran is overwhelmingly occupied with repeating biblical stories of Noah, Abraham, Jesus, Moses, Pharaoh, and others, after copying them from the Bible and Torah, mocking disbelievers, mocking Jews and Christians by describing them as monkeys and pigs or cattle, threatening them with hellfire and painful torment by skinning them off, tempting Muslims with houris (virgins) in paradise, describing their breasts in detail, promising rivers of wine, milk, grape trees, palm trees, and—oddly enough—shade…Yes, shade! because the Arabs suffered in the desert heat and needed to be incentivized. Not great news for those in cold European countries considering Islam, unfortunately.
Another major issue for those who claim that the Quran alone is sufficient is the blatant contradiction between its verses. For example, at one point, alcohol is permitted, with the only restriction being “Do not approach prayer while intoxicated.” Later on, however, alcohol is completely forbidden. You have one verse that preaches peace and love, while the other calls for war, beheading, and total mobilization against disbelievers to spread Islam. This contradiction stems from the two distinct phases of Mohammad’s prophethood, the weak phase in Mecca (13 years) and the military phase in Medina (10 years). During his time in Mecca, Mohammad only managed to convert about 150 followers. He tried to attract people peacefully, especially Christians, Jews and polytheists but got ridiculed for failing to perform any miracles and was called crazy and delusional. After emigrating to Medina, Mohammad formed an army and took up arms against his own people. His followers grew rapidly, thousands joined out of greed for war spoils or fear of his brutality. A prime example is the genocide of Jewish tribes, where Mohammad dug a mass grave, beheaded more than 800 people, including any male with pubic hair, whether a child or an elderly man and enslaved all their women. A specific case is his Jewish wife, Safiyya, whose father (Huyayy ibn Akhtab), her husband (Kinana bin Al-Rabi) and her brother (Yasser bin Hayyi) were all killed before she was taken as his wife. These two contrasting phases explain the clear contradictions in the Quran’s verses. This is why any real Muslim scholar mocks those who claim to rely only on the Quran—because they know how weak and foolish this stance is. Without the Hadith, Islam does not exist! Some so-called “Islamic reformers” acknowledge the importance of the Hadith but cherry-pick what suits their personal taste. When confronted by real Muslims, they stand no chance in debates. Any Islamic scholar or preacher will easily expose their contradiction with a simple question: “How can you accept one Hadith from a book of authentic Hadiths while rejecting another from the same book? Does this not make the entire collection unreliable and false?” At this moment, the so-called “moderate Muslim” reformer becomes embarrassed, unable to respond, because deep down, they know their logic is fundamentally flawed and self-contradictory.
In the title of this article, I used the analogy “Quran Roulette” to convey a message that Islamic reform is a dangerous gamble that could lead the West to become a third-world nation. Waiting and hoping for a fundamental change in Islam is like putting a gun to one’s head and hoping that a single bullet does not fire. It is merely wishful thinking, unsupported by real data, facts, or predictions. Some believe that globalization, the internet, and social media will be decisive factors in moving Muslims from a mindset of ignorance to the enlightenment of Western and human values. But haven’t others made the same misguided prediction before? When Johannes Gutenberg invented the modern printing press with movable metal capability in Germany in 1440, did this make a real difference? Or did it, on the contrary, contribute to the spread of Islamic religious books into every home, mosque, and school, inciting hatred and violence against others? What about the invention of television in the 1920s, which became widespread in the 1950s? Did it make Muslims look at the outside world beyond the Islamic bubble and recognize the source of their ignorance and backwardness? Or was it used as a tool to spread Islam, create religious TV programs, and host Imams from all over the world? What about the internet and social media? Have they contributed to reforming Islam, or have they instead become platforms for hatred, incitement, and insults against non-Muslims and Jews? A good example is what the world has witnessed after the bloody terrorist attacks on October 7, where more than 1,200 innocent people in Israel were killed and hundreds of women and children were taken as hostages. What happened, in reality, is that social media became filled with open hatred against Jews and calls for the elimination of Israel from the map.
Many Muslims in European societies, although at first glance they go to school and work like anyone else, often live in a completely parallel world. Children are taught at home not to eat their classmates’ food because it is Haram, that European women are immoral and lack honour, and that their men are disgusting and pathetic for allowing their women to dress indecently. Girls are taught that Western men are morally corrupt and only want to sleep with them, and that they should not befriend their classmates too much because they date other boys and will corrupt their morals. This daily indoctrination at home explains why generation after generation of Muslims grow up with the same extremist mindset as their parents, sometimes even worse. What is the solution for those who claim that all Muslims will become moderate over time? Raiding homes and eavesdropping on them?
Given the previous inventions mentioned, what is the next hope? Artificial intelligence? Perhaps it will help Muslims find verses about killing infidels, beating women, throwing homosexuals from buildings, cutting off the hands of thieves, and stoning women to death in an easier way, instead of having to search books for hours to find Islamic legal rulings. Because, as someone who grew up in this environment, I can assure you that we do not like to read much. Perhaps AI will be used to develop an artificially intelligent Islamic Imam who spreads Islam at record speed, with all the references and sources at his disposal, ready to combat the other “infidel” AI models…
The steps taken by countries trying to enforce Islamic reform, such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are undoubtedly positive developments and should be encouraged. However, these changes must also be placed in their proper context. They are driven purely by self-interest with a desire to integrate themselves more into the global market, attract more investments, and prevent the rise of extremist religious groups that could pose a direct threat to their royal power. The biggest example of this is the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood. Therefore, it is not enough to rely on these limited changes within the borders of Gulf states, as they stem from self-interest and have had a positive impact on the Gulf population only due to their tribal loyalty to their leaders, not because of genuine awareness of Islam’s deep-rooted problems. All it takes is the rise of a new extremist Gulf monarch, and you will see the table turned once again, bringing things back to square one. The clearest evidence of this is countries like Iran, Syria, and Egypt, which were at the height of openness and secularism in the 20th century but later regressed into religious extremism and backwardness. All it takes is a change in power and the seizure of the state. If the Gulf countries are truly serious about Islamic reform, they must publicly denounce the Hadith and burn these books, which still fill every home, mosque, and school. After decades of promoting Islam, supporting Islamic satellite channels and Imams, and infiltrating Muslim households to gain power and control over the Muslim world, they should take responsibility for their actions rather than suddenly shedding the cloak of extremism and ridiculing Muslims in Europe. It is hypocritical to act as if these individuals do not represent Islam or that they were never part of the problem, especially when these same Gulf countries had, until recently, enforced Islamic rulings such as beheadings, whipping, and banning women from driving.
Finally, the truth is that there is no such thing as a “radical Muslim” and a “moderate Muslim.” There is only a true Muslim who follows his religion with conviction and a non-practising Muslim who knows little about his faith. The solution is not collective punishment, of course, but rather to remove the religious classification from Islam that allows Islam to hide under the umbrella of other religions, and by recognizing it as a fascist ideology that poses a danger to society. Closing mosques and banning the barbaric slaughter of animals for Halal meat could send a clear message that Islam is not welcome in Europe. I believe in European awareness and that only by confronting the ideology, not the individuals who happened to be born into Islam, can Europe rise again. The invasion today is not through swords and camels as it was in the past but through a more subtle infiltration. Islam operates like a cancerous cell that destroys others, and when it ultimately kills the host, it destroys itself, as we see in Islamic countries. Islam now enters like a Trojan Horse; or should you call it Trojan Camel, and it does not need a leader in our time, as its leader is an immortal figure who lives in the minds of believers, a man who lived 1,400 years ago and cannot be defeated with weapons but only through words, criticism and strict laws.
If the sanctity of this religion is not dismantled, then the sacrifices of European ancestors who shed their blood to repel Islamic invasions in the East and South of Europe will have been in vain.
Remember, if a society remains united, it can defeat any external enemy, rebuild, develop, and rise again. But if the fabric of its society is manipulated and torn apart from within, then there will be no hope left.
